Overview

ernesty ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our website and services. Many people use this site to research disability accommodations, sometimes on shared or work computers, so we built it to know as little about you as possible.

The Free Tools

Your selections in our free tools (the Accommodation Finder, Deadline Calculator, and Rights Checker) stay in your browser. They are never stored on our servers with your identity, and they are never sent to our analytics. We count aggregate selections, for example how many times a particular accommodation was viewed on a given day, without recording who made them: no account, no user ID, no session ID, no IP address, and no exact timestamps are attached to those counts.

Tool state is kept in the page URL so your back button works and you can share or bookmark results. That means your selections are visible in your own browser history and in any link you choose to share. Clear your browser history to remove them, and share result links only with people you trust.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the site is used, so we can make it clearer and more useful. Here is exactly what that involves:

  • One cookie. We set one cookie of our own on ernesty.com. It holds a random ID and a session ID, so we can tell that the same browser came back and what one visit looked like from start to finish. It contains no name, no email address, no IP address, and none of your choices in our tools. It is not shared with advertisers and does not follow you to other websites. It expires after a year. Our app at app.ernesty.com uses the same cookie, so visits to both count as one browser.
  • Pages and clicks. Which pages are viewed, which links and buttons are clicked, and how far down a page you read. Anything after a "?" in a web address is removed before it is sent.
  • Session recordings, but never in the tools. On article, pricing and other information pages, PostHog records how the page is used: scrolling, clicks and mouse movement, with anything typed into a form masked out. Recording is switched off on every free tool page and stays off until you leave the tools.
  • Never your tool selections. Clicks inside the free tools are not recorded and not sent individually. What you choose in the Accommodation Finder, Deadline Calculator or Rights Checker leaves your browser only as an anonymous count, as described under The Free Tools above.
  • Your answer to "was this helpful?" The yes or no, and the page it was about, is sent to PostHog. A note you type is sent only as an anonymous message with no ID attached.
  • Do Not Track is honoured. If your browser sends the Do Not Track signal, nothing at all is sent to PostHog.

Usage events look like "a visitor completed the deadline calculator" or "a reader clicked the pricing button on an article." None of them contains anything you typed or chose.

Payments

Payments are processed by Stripe, our payment processor. When you purchase, checkout happens on Stripe's own secure page: Stripe receives your payment details (card number, billing information, and email) and handles them under Stripe's privacy policy. We never see or store your full card number.

Information You Provide

If you email us with questions or feedback, we receive what you send and use it only to respond. Browsing this site and using the free tools requires no account and no personal information.

Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. The only third parties that receive any data are the two named above: PostHog (usage analytics and session recordings, as described under Analytics) and Stripe (payment processing, only if you make a purchase), plus legal authorities if we are ever required by law.

Cookies and Device Storage

This site sets one analytics cookie, described above, and keeps the same random ID and session details in your browser's local storage for ernesty.com. It sets no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and it does not store your tool activity on your device. To remove everything, clear cookies and site data for ernesty.com in your browser; the next visit starts with a new random ID unconnected to the old one.

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, starting with collecting as little of it as possible. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your information
  • Opt out of marketing communications
  • Data portability

For this website, the only thing we hold that relates to you is usage data tied to the random ID in your cookie. That ID is not connected to your name or email address, by us or by anyone else, and clearing your cookies breaks the link entirely.

Children's Privacy

Our services are not directed to individuals under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
