Accommodation Request

A communication letting an employer know you need a change due to a medical condition.

An accommodation request is any communication that lets your employer know you need some change at work because of a medical condition. No "magic words" are required.

What counts as a request: - "I need to adjust my schedule for medical appointments" - "My back problems make it hard to stand all day" - "I'm having trouble concentrating because of my medication" - A doctor's note recommending restrictions

What's NOT required: - Using the words "reasonable accommodation" or "ADA" - Making the request in writing (though recommended) - Knowing exactly what accommodation you need - Having a diagnosis

Best practices: - Put your request in writing (email creates documentation) - Be specific about the barriers you're facing - Suggest accommodations if you know what might help - Follow up if you don't get a response

The request starts the interactive process. Once you've communicated the need, your employer has a duty to engage with you about solutions.
