Marginal Functions

Secondary job duties that are not central to the position and may be reassigned as an accommodation.

Marginal functions are job duties that are secondary, occasional, or not central to the purpose of the position. Unlike essential functions, marginal functions can be reassigned to other employees as a reasonable accommodation.

Examples might include: - Occasional filing when that's not a primary duty - Answering phones when that's not a main responsibility - Attending optional events

The distinction matters because an employer can require you to perform essential functions but may need to reassign marginal functions if your disability prevents you from doing them.
